The Rundown: Google just went operational on its first-of-its-kind geothermal plant in Nevada — seeking to prove a new advanced drilling method to access previously inaccessible heat energy deep underground.
The details:
The method builds on methods from oil/gas industry to unlock geothermal potential previously blocked by geology.
The plant delivers constant, weather-independent electricity while radically reducing drilling risk and land use versus wind and solar.
Google partnered with clean-energy startup Fervo on the plant, who also just broke ground on a larger-scale version in Utah.
The tech giant has set a goal to operate its data centers and campuses on 24/7 carbon-free energy by 2030.
